Man Utd icon Gary Neville mocked for questioning Alexis Mac Allister to Liverpool transfer
Liverpool look to be closing in on an agreement to sign Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton ahead of the summer transfer window.
Gary Neville has taken some slack on social media for questioning Liverpool's pursuit of Alexis Mac Allister after seemingly moving on from trying to sign Jude Bellingham. Liverpool had been strongly linked with a move for Bellingham before reports broke last month that they were turning their attention elsewhere.
It was claimed that a deal to sign Bellingham this summer would blow Liverpool's budget and they seemingly want to use that money to help overhaul their midfield options with multiple signings. Brighton star and World Cup winner Mac Allister has emerged as the club's top target in recent weeks.
A deal for the Argentina international won't come cheap with Brighton likely to put up a similar fight to when Arsenal tried to sign Moises Caicedo in January. It's been suggested that Liverpool may need to stump up as much as £80million to convince Brighton to sell Mac Allister.
And Neville has seemingly questioned whether the 24-year-old is an adequate alternative to Bellingham. "Liverpool with no Bellingham but get Mac Allister?" Neville tweeted.
"That Enough to get back in CL places? £80m!!" But Neville's probe hasn't proven a popular take on social media with many pointing to United's own record in the transfer market with Carragher leading the responses, tweeting: "Obsessed!!!!"

United are now also looking over their shoulders in the fight to secure Champions League football next season. Liverpool have finally begun delivering consistent performances and picked up their sixth consecutive win after beating Brentford on Saturday.
United's defeat to Brighton in the midweek means Liverpool have now closed the gap to just one point on their rivals. But Erik ten Hag's side do have two games in hand to give them an advantage over Liverpool.
