Manchester United were ruthlessly trolled by Brentford on Sunday after finding themselves 4-0 down to Manchester City by the midway point of their Premier League showdown at the Etihad Stadium. The Red Devils were no match for their Manchester neighbours as they ultimately went on to find themselves on the end of a 6-3 thumping.
United went into their clash across town off the back of four straight Premier League victories. But they fell behind after eight minutes as Phil Foden turned in Bernardo Silva’s cross. Erling Haaland then scored a quickfire double in the latter stages of the opening period as he got on the end of two Kevin de Bruyne deliveries. And Foden turned in his second from close range just before the interval as the hosts found themselves in dream land.
Before the game at the Etihad Stadium, United hadn’t lost in the Premier League since mid-August. That defeat had come in west London against Brentford as the Bees won the match 4-0. On that occasion, all four of Brentford’s goals had come in the opening period, meaning they matched the Citizens’ first half showing. And the club’s Twitter admins were more than happy to make the comparisons as they mocked United.
“Brentford Manchester City,” read the post with a shaking hand emoji between the words. “4-0 up at half-time.”

United produced a shambolic display at Brentford in their second game of the season as new manager Erik ten Hag found himself under huge pressure just one week into the campaign. Josh Dasilva opened the scoring for the hosts after just 10 minutes as David de Gea allowed his tame effort to squirm beyond him. And Mathias Jensen doubled his team’s advantage eight minutes later after dispossessing Christian Eriksen in the Red Devils penalty area.
A shellshocked United couldn’t respond and conceded a third on the half-hour mark as Ben Mee bundled the ball home from close range. And Bryan Mbeumo completed the rout with 10 minutes of the first half still to play.

United tried to keep the game alive after the break at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday as summer signing Antony scored his second Premier League goal. But Haaland and Foden both completed their hat-tricks to extend City’s lead to 6-1.
Red Devils substitute Anthony Martial then hit a brace in the closing stages of the contest. But it was too little, too late for the visitors and City claimed all three points.
