United have come under heavy fire for their defensive errors this season, but Fernandes struggles to understand what's going wrong.
He continued: "It's difficult to explain why that's [mistakes in defence] happened. We have basically the same defenders as last season, with Raphael Varane.
"We all have to be a little bit more compact, try to close the gaps because it's [mistakes] happening many times.
"We've learned from that. We kept a clean sheet against Tottenham, against Atalanta was not as good."
