Manchester United icon Rio Ferdinand doesn't think Ole Gunnar Solskjaer can fix his side's current issues by solely signing a top-class defensive midfielder. Ferdinand has criticised United's current style off the ball and, urging Solskjaer to improve his side's foundations over anything else.

The ex-United defender believes one top-class defensive midfielder won't improve United until the team starts pressing as a unit off the ball.
He told Vibe with FIVE: "We've all cried out, all the United fanbase are saying a defensive midfielder's needed. Watching the last few games, I don't even think that player covers over the cracks.
"No one player can absolutely change everything if the structure of the team isn't working to the fundamentals, the foundations. One player doesn't change everything.
"I go back to my point about pressing. It doesn't matter if Michael Carrick is playing there or N'Golo Kante is playing there.

"If Jadon Sancho is pressing on his own and Kante is there by himself - you think he's going to be able to cover four or five men? That's what I'm saying.
"I saw it far too many times in this weekend's game, and I've seen it many times in the past three or four weeks.
"I've watched them intensely. There are too many occasions where I see a player go to press, and the team aren't behind him.
"I'm not talking one or two players; the team aren't pressing behind it. You can't press a team like that."
