Goals from Olivier Giroud, Kurt Zouma and Christian Pulisic cancelled out Patrick Bamford’s early strike as Chelsea claimed a 3-1 win over Leeds on Saturday night. The Blues are now flying high at the top of the Premier League table, and Danny Murphy says they have an unlikely hero to thank.
Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has been told that he has a new undroppable star after the win over Leeds.
The Blues claimed a 3-1 win over Leeds on Saturday night, as goals from Olivier Giroud, Kurt Zouma and Christian Pulisic cancelled out Patrick Bamford’s fourth minute strike.
France striker Giroud, who scored four in Sevilla in the Champions League during week, repaid Lampard’s faith by finding the back of the net yet again.
There has been plenty of speculation that the 34-year-old is on his way out of Stamford Bridge.
But Match of the Day pundit Danny Murphy now thinks that Giroud has made his position untenable in Lampard’s side.
The former Liverpool man insists that his knowledge of the game is second to none, and he should be the first name on the team sheet right now.
"Frank was right to mention Leeds’ qualities but Giroud deserves all the credit in the world," Murphy explained.
"He’s not underrated by me or people that know football - if you play the game at the top level you know how important a striker like he is to the team. He’s a focal point.
"He nearly scored early on with the first header, I don’t know how Timo Werner kept that out. He looked so up for it, he’s full of confidence after midweek and all good strikers gamble on space. It was a superb finish.
"Game awareness as well, knowing where people are running, and his strength and presence. Everything about his performance says keep me in the team.
"Leeds were unhappy about the second but it was just his physical presence that knocked over Liam Cooper. He’s rightly in the team, he’s earned his way.
"People were thinking about him leaving or talk of him going in January as he wants to play in the Euros but he’s undroppable at the moment.
"He deserves great credit for his attitude to get into that position."
