Steven Gerrard has emerged as a shock target for Bristol City’s ambitious billionaire owner Steve Lansdown.
Lansdown is looking for a new boss for his Championship outfit after sacking Lee Johnson last weekend following a run of nine games without a win.
He has drawn up a shortlist that includes Liverpool legend Gerrard, 40, who has spent the last two years in charge of Rangers in Scotland.
Former Brighton boss Chris Hughton, Charlton’s Lee Bowyer and Plymouth Argyle’s Ryan Lowe are also in the frame.
But Lansdown believes that Gerrard is the man to fulfil his ambition of mounting a bid to win promotion to the Premier League next season.

The Liverpool legend only put pen to paper in December on a deal that ties him to Rangers until 2024 so won’t be easy to tempt away.
Gerrard has been tipped as Jurgen Klopp’s long-term successor at Anfield after impressing in his first management role.
Even though he is yet to win a trophy Rangers have made giant strides towards closing the gap between themselves and arch rivals Celtic under his leadership.
City pulled the trigger on Johnson following last weekend's defeat to Cardiff.
The club's chief executive, Mark Ashton, said: “We recognise the huge amount of work that Lee has put in over the last four and a half years to move this club forward and we thank him for all his efforts.
“There have been some special moments over those years and Lee has played a significant part in them.
“However, success in football is ultimately judged by results and league position and the board believes that a change of management is needed now for Bristol City.”
