Winning a derby not vital - Gold
EVERYONE in the blue half of Birmingham will be dreaming of a fairytale that could see City beating Aston Villa this afternoon – except David Gold, that is.
It is not that the club’s co-owner does not want Birmingham to win what could turn out to be his last derby in charge.
It is just that he thinks it is more important to beat sides like Burnley, Stoke, Wigan and Wolves.
“Lots of fans will say they don’t mind getting relegated as long as we beat the Villa, but not me,” he said.
“The most important thing is not to allow our real competitors to beat us.
“I wish I wasn’t saying this but Aston Villa are not our competitors right now. Stoke, Burnley, Portsmouth, Wigan and Wolves – they are our competitors and we must not let them beat us.”
Gold’s mind will also be on a pivotal deadline day on October 1 when City will know whether they have been taken over by Chinese tycoon Carson Yeung.
