Liverpool player ratings vs Atletico Madrid: Reds impress in battling defeat
Liverpool player ratings - how the Reds performed against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League last-16 tie.
Liverpool put in a stirring European performance against the stubborn Atletico Madrid only to come unstuck in extra time. Georginio Wijnaldum scored the equalising goal to level the tie just before half time at Anfield but they were unable to recover from the sucker punch.
Marcos Llorente scored a double before Alvaro Morata’s late winner secured Atletico’s place in the last eight.
It means Liverpool go out and have to concentrate on finishing up the league season - which they could still win next Monday against Everton if Manchester City lose to Burnley on Saturday.
It was Jurgen Klopp's first defeat in Europe and comes in a fourth defeat in six games.
LIVERPOOL (4-3-3)
Adrian – 5
Not wholly convincing with nervy moments including from Felix, suffers in comparison with Alisson
Alexander-Arnold 8
Fired in crosses like a Gatling gun in the first half and a constant threat. Went close with shot on 70 minutes
Gomez 7
Well timed interception to pick ball off Felix boot on 10 minutes the highlight of a composed display
Van Dijk 6
Outshone by his defensive partner but an assured presence and made a nuisance of himself from set-pieces
Robertson 7
Quiet first half by his standards, warmed up second half with some surging runs and header against bar.
Henderson 6
Perhaps lucky to escape a booking for foul on Correa but beat out a strong rhythm in the middle.
Wijnaldum 7
Well directed downward header for opener the high point of a hard-running all action display
Oxlade-Chamberlain 9
Powerful driving force through middle and right, well-placed cross for opener. Massive contribution
Salah 7
Tireless work back and forward, gave Lodi a torrid time on the right even if final ball would not fall for him.
Firmino 6
Went close on a couple of occasions but his touch in front of goal has just deserted him at the moment
Mane 6
Tame shot saved early, better volley blocked early in second but put in a good defensive shift as well
Subs: Fabinho, Minamino, Lallana, Lonergan, Origi, Matip
