Man Utd: Strong characters have ‘disappeared’ says van der Sar
Michael Owen has admitted Manchester United have proved him wrong by progressively getting worse.
United are 12th in the Premier League table eight games into the season.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have won just two matches and lost three, the latest a 1-0 defeat at Newcastle last Sunday.
United have also struggled in Europe, scraping past FC Astana 1-0 before a drab 0-0 draw at AZ Alkmaar.
I always thought that ‘it can’t get any worse’ but it actually is and it’s scary to think where they could go
The Carabao Cup did not go much better as they required a penalty shootout to beat League One outfit Rochdale.
Owen thinks it is far more likely United finish in the bottom half of the Premier League than it is they qualify for the Champions League.
And he says it is “scary” how his former side continue to get worse - something he could not envisage happening.
“It’s [Man United] in name only,” Owen told Premier League Productions.
“The quicker people realise that this is them at the moment…
“This has been coming, it’s been in front of us for a long time. I don’t even think it’s them playing really, really bad - I just think this is them.
“We’re talking about a team that’s in the bottom half of the table.
“It’s not an actual given that they’re going to get out of that bottom half this season.
Man Utd: Expert says Liverpool loss could be 'end' for Solskjaer
“They’ve got more chance of being in the bottom half than they have in the top four, put it that way.
“So it’s a really, really poor side at the minute. There’s huge problems there, they’ve been coming for years and years.
“I always thought that ‘it can’t get any worse’ but it actually is and it’s scary to think where they could go.”
United’s first game after the international break is against bitter rivals Liverpool [October 20], who have won all eight of their Premier League games so far.
