Sunderland fans split over next boss as Ian Holloway declares interest in Black Cats job
Jack Ross was sacked by League One Sunderland yesterday.
Sunderland fans have been left divided after Ian Holloway declared his interest in the main job at the Stadium of Light.
The manager, who was last employed by QPR before leaving the club in May 2018, admitted he would 'run' to Sunderland now to take the job, citing the large fanbase as his main reason for wanting the role.
Following the sacking of previous boss Jack Ross after a 2-0 loss to Lincoln City, which left the Black Cats in sixth place in League One, Holloway told talkSPORT: "What a job that is for somebody.
"You are guaranteed however many thousand [fans] a week and you have got to produce. What a wonderful, wonderful opportunity with a great fanbase to get things going again.
"I would run up there now! I have never been favourite for anything, I have always been an underdog. I would love the challenge of a football club like that.
"It is a wonderful job. Whoever they want to choose, they need someone with motivational skills like you won’t believe because at the end of the day it is bringing that crowd back with the team."
But supporters of the north east side cannot agree on whether the 56-year-old, who has been promoted with Blackpool, QPR and Crystal Palace, would be a good appointment.
"He’s sure to give them a kick up the a*** and he’s got a track record to be proud of."
Sunderland: Jack Ross appointed as new manager in 2018
One fan wrote: "If sunlun (sic) appoint Ian Holloway I’m quitting supporting football."
Another agreed: "*opens twitter*
"*sees Ian Holloway begging for #SAFC job*
"*deletes app*"
A third fan concurred: "OMG if I see the name 'Ian Holloway'... things are getting thrown!"
Some fans are keen for the Bristolian to take over however, with one fan arguing: "Every time we sacked a manager in the Prem, I would howl at people suggesting Ian Holloway. Now we’re in League 1 I can’t think of anyone I’d rather have.
Another supporter wrote:"Ian Holloway! What a gaffer he’d be!"
While a third added: "Holloway wants the job, I’d have him like."
Reading star Charlie Adam, who played under Holloway at Blackpool, also gave his backing to the boss, who he believes "is the man" for the former Premier League side.
He tweeted: "Think @IanOllie7 is the man for @SunderlandAFC."
