Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer issues apology to Red Devils fans after Newcastle blow
Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has apologised to fans after Sunday's defeat to Newcastle.
Man Utd: Solskjaer apologises to fans for Newcastle loss
Manchester United fans endured another torrid afternoon on Sunday as they were beaten 1-0 by Newcastle United.
The Magpies earned the win through an impressive strike from Matty Longstaff.
The Premier League debutant picked up the ball on the edge of the area before ripping his shot at the bottom corner.
United have now gone 11 games away from home without winning, an unwanted record stretching back to 1989.
It leaves Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in a tumultuous situation, with speculation ramping up that he could leave his post at Old Trafford.
The last time United won away from home was against PSG in the Champions League. Solskjaer was appointed to the full-time role just weeks later.
But now United sit 12th in the league, five points behind fifth-placed Chelsea.
After the defeat, Solskjaer took the time to apologise to the travelling fans, saying: “I say sorry to the fans that we are not winning games.
“We have given ourselves a tough task to get into the top four. Never mind top six.
“We need to get results, get momentum I can't give you what I acceptable. Every game at this club should be a winnable game.
“We have to raise our game and raise our supporters mood with Liverpool next.
“The game was symptomatic of where we are. We don't create enough chances to deserve to win a game of football.
Man Utd: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reflects on Newcastle defeat
“I didn't see it coming. We couldn't control the ball, it was a hot potato and bouncing off our feet. Second half it was better.”
Solskjaer was keen to ensure fans didn’t ignore the positives, however, and expressed that all the team has to do is get one win and performances can snowball.
“Confidence is a big thing,” he continued. “Performance and results give you confidence. When there is a decision to make they don't do it instinctively. It effects everyone.
“We are unhappy with the result. That brings out the mood of everyone. That is down to us starting a rebuild. We are going through a very difficult period. When you lack six of the starting XI from the first game, of course that will impact on performances.
“We will work hard to get them back but the lads who are out there gave everything. The attitude is fantastic to get back but the decision making was not good enough.
“We gave them too many counter attacks and that lifted them and lifted the crowd and Brucey.”
