Chelsea stars Willian and Marcos Alonso argue over free-kick in Lille win
Chelsea stars Willian and Marcos Alonso appeared to have a brief fall-out during Wednesday night’s win over Lille.
Chelsea vs Lille: Abraham and Willian react to 2-1 win
Chelsea beat Lille 2-1 in the Champions League on Wednesday night, but the game wasn’t completely without controversy.
During the first half of the game, Chelsea were awarded a free-kick just outside the Lille penalty area.
The ball was positioned in the centre of the pitch, and both Alonso and Willian stood over it prepared to strike.
However, at this point, the two appeared to have a stern disagreement over who would be taking the free-kick.
Willian looked like he was preparing to take it, but to his surprise Alonso stepped up before him.
The left-back blazed his effort over the bar, but it was the reaction of Willian that caught many by surprise.
The Brazilian could be seen holding his arms out in utter shock, watching the ball sail over the crossbar.
It was the second time in the competition that Chelsea players have argued over a dead ball situation.
During Chelsea’s 1-0 defeat to Valencia, Jorginho and Willian were seen questioning Ross Barkley’s decision to take a crucial penalty.
Barkley stepped up and missed the spot-kick as Frank Lampard’s Champions League managerial debut ended in defeat.
Luckily, however, Chelsea managed to get the win against Lille, sparing Alonso’s blushes.
Willian went on to get the winner in the second half, earning the Blues their first Champions League win since the round of 16 in 2018.
Tammy Abraham continued his fine run of form by scoring his eighth game of the season.
Victor Osimhen got Lille back in the game after half-an-hour, before Willian won the tie with a superb volley with 15 minutes to go.
The result leaves Chelsea third in their group, level on points with Valencia. Their next game will be against Ajax after the international break.
