Why Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be ‘very disappointed’ with Man Utd win over Rochdale
Manchester United scraped through to the Carabao Cup fourth round draw with a penalty shootout win over Rochdale.
Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be “very disappointed” despite beating Rochdale in the Carabao Cup, claims former West Brom and Wolves striker Don Goodman.
The Red Devils were held to a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford by the League One side.
However, the hosts came out on top on penalties, scoring all five of their spot-kicks to win 5-3.
Mason Greenwood had put United in front with 20 minutes remaining but 16-year-old Luke Matheson scored a dream goal for Rochdale to level the game up.
He’ll be very disappointed that they haven’t had the nouse to beat Rochdale in normal time
Goodman says it was a necessity that Manchester United won the game and does not think Solskjaer will be best pleased with his side’s performance.
“I think so [Solskjaer will be relieved], yeah,” Goodman said.
“He’ll be very disappointed that they haven’t had the nouse to beat Rochdale in normal time.
“But if you’re not going to do it in normal time, you simply must win the penalty shootout.”
Former England left-back Andy Hinchcliffe agreed it was not the best way for United to bounce back from Sunday’s loss to West Ham.
However, he says it will not matter if United go on to win the competition.
“If you go on to win the competition no one is going to remember this anyway,” Hinchcliffe said.
“That’s the key thing, United have to aim to try to win this competition.
“Getting through games, winning at home, win them, doesn’t matter who you’re playing.
“They played against West Ham, really poor, lose the game, get back to winning ways, they’ve done that tonight.
“It’s not been a classic but at least they’ve won the game, they take that into the Arsenal game now.”
