What Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has said behind the scenes after series of Man Utd summer exits
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has told Tahith Chong what he must do to get into the Manchester United team after a series of summer exits.
Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has urged Tahith Chong to work hard in order to be given a shot at breaking into the side.
Chong, 19, has made four appearances for the Manchester United first-team after being handed his debut last season.
The forward has seen his chances of getting game time boosted by the departures of both Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez in recent weeks, and he has now revealed his desire to make an impact this season.
“Ole tells me to keep working hard and my chances will come," Chong told Voetbal Primeur.
“That’s nice to hear. There are a few players who left and I’m climbing up the pecking order.”
The Netherlands U21 international has admitted his delight that Solskjaer is keen on handing youth players a more prominent role at Old Trafford, with Chong currently in talks over a new deal.
“It’s always nice to come back to the Netherlands, but in the end I have to do what I find best for myself.
“That’s why I decided to stay.
“Of course we are talking (about a new deal), but it’s still too early to say anything about it.
“The season is still long and we will see what happens.
“There are a lot of competitions coming up and I will focus on that.”
Solskjaer has made no secret of his plan to utilise United’s youth system to his advantage while he is in the hot seat, and spoke earlier this year about his plan surrounding youngsters for the current campaign.
He said: “I have to say it’s nice for them to get a full season somewhere and play but, then again, maybe the best place to be is here, training with the best players in the world.
”In this environment, we’ve got a history of making them [young players] the best but we’ve got loads of good experiences of players being out for a year and coming back as men.
“Let’s see what we decide with these boys but I can see most staying here and getting their chances next year.”
