Wales manager Ryan Giggs calls for referees to protect Man Utd star Daniel James
Wales manager Ryan Giggs believes Manchester United winger Daniel James needs better protection from referees.
Manchester United winger Daniel James was booked for diving on Monday against Wolves, but Giggs believes the youngster isn’t the type to fool officials.
United drew 1-1 at Molineux after Anthony Martial’s goal was cancelled out by a Ruben Neves screamer.
It was the first time James had started a Premier League game for the Red Devils, after scoring on his home debut against Chelsea.
The game was marred for James in part, however, after he was shown a yellow card for diving.
Known for his electric pace, the speedster knocked the ball past Joao Moutinho before skipping around him.
In doing so, however, he caught the trailing leg of the Portuguese midfielder and went over, resulting in the booking.
James faced criticism from opposition fans, and was booed by home fans, but Giggs remained calm over the winger, and insisted that he will continue to be fouled going forward.
“Dan gets kicked a lot,” he said. “Sometimes when you anticipate it, it can look like a dive.
“With the speed he’s going at it can look worse.
“He gets a lot of stick and referees need to protect him, but I’m not worried.
“I’ve watched a lot of United’s pre-season games and Dan did well.
“I was at the game when he scored and his movement is very good.
“As a midfielder I wouldn’t have minded playing behind a player like that.
“I thought he did well the other night against Wolves.
“He took a bit of stick, but I thought he grew into the game.
“His work ethic was really good at a difficult place.”
