Man Utd transfer target Sergej Milinkovic-Savic reveals truth behind summer rumours
MANCHESTER UNITED transfer target Sergej Milinkovic-Savic has revealed the truth behind Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s reported interest in the Lazio midfielder.
Man United: Milinkovic-Savic would make club better says pundit
Manchester United boss Solskjaer was reportedly interested in signing Milinkovic-Savic from Lazio this summer.
But the midfielder has rubbished claims that he was close to a switch to the Red Devils.
The 24-year-old said that he is happy at Lazio and never wanted to move anyway.
It was believed that Solskjaer was lining up a move for Milinkovic-Savic if Paul Pogba was sold earlier in the transfer window.
I never mentioned a possible transfer to Manchester United and it was just paper talk
But, seeing as a Real Madrid move for Pogba never materialised, the United hierarchy never made an offer for the Serbia international.
“I never said I wanted to leave Lazio, I feel good here,” Milinkovic-Savic told Sport Plus.
“I never mentioned a possible transfer to Manchester United and it was just paper talk.
“New commitments await me with Lazio.”
If United did choose to make a move for Milinkovic-Savic, it would likely have cost them in excess of £74million.
The Lazio star has also recently insisted that the story is now officially over, and he’s simply concentrating on the new Serie A season.
“The transfer deadline has passed in England, so the story around Manchester United has ended,” Milinkovic-Savic told Serbian outlet Espresso.
“I wasn't too upset with everything that was written [about my future]. I was concentrating on preparations for the new season as best I could. I am where I am.
“I'm staying in Lazio. I don't think too much about the transfer market.
“Everything is written, but I know where my head is, and who I have a contract with.”
The Serbian was just one of a number of central midfielders that United were linked to this summer.
It was also believed that Solskjaer wanted to sign Sporting Lisbon midfielder Bruno Fernandes, as well as Sean Longstaff from Newcastle.
But United opted not to strengthen in midfield as they made three signings in Daniel James, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Harry Maguire at a combined cost of almost £150m.
