Paul Ince picks out four problem players at Man Utd in scathing attack ahead of new season
PAUL INCE has slammed four Manchester United stars for their performances during the club’s dismal 2018/19 season.
Manchester United failed to qualify for next season’s Champions League after finishing outside of the top four places in the Premier League last term.
Their season took a few dramatic turns, starting with Jose Mourinho’s sacking back in December before Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took over.
The Norwegian managed to steady the ship and picked up nine wins in his first 11 games but ultimately they fell short of the top four after another dismal run.
And Ince, whose career at United spanned six years, believes that the club aren’t helping themselves by rewarding players who performed poorly during their campaign.
"You’ve got Marcus Rashford who scored 11 goals last year and gets a new contract," he told BBC 5Live.
"Jesse Lingard was diabolical last year, he really, really was.”
Ince went on to blast Alexis Sanchez, who signed for United in January 2018 but has only scored five goals since his arrival.
"Then there’s Alexis Sanchez. They got nothing out of Sanchez whatsoever,” he added.
United have secured the signatures of Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka so far this summer for a combined £68m.
Solskjaer is also after a defender - namely Harry Maguire, but his club Leicester are not budging on their £80m valuation of him.
But Ince believes that the club should be looking at bringing in attacking players instead of centre-backs.
"So as much as we’re talking about the defence and Chris Smalling and Harry Maguire, surely we’ve got to be looking at who’s going to be playing up top,” he said.
"We need to be looking at that because attacking-wise they’re not great.
"Martial? He’s a fizzy drink. He pops now and then. One moment he’s great, one moment he’s not."
United have picked up three wins out of three so far in pre-season against Perth Glory, Leeds and Inter Milan.
They’ve also managed to keep a clean sheet in each one of those victories, scoring a combined seven goals in the process.
