Daniel James transfer to Manchester United slammed on live TV - they ‘don’t need’ him
DANIEL JAMES is not the type of transfer that is going to take Manchester United back to where they want to be.
Man Utd: Expert criticises Solskjaer over Daniel James transfer
That is the opinion of ESPN FC pundit and former Liverpool defender Steve Nicol.
Manchester United announced on Friday they have agreed to sign James from Championship side Swansea.
The fee for the 21-year-old is set to be £15million and he will become the Red Devils’ first signing of the Ole Gunnar Solskjaer era.
James has played just one full season in the Swansea first team but his extreme pace caught the eye of a number of Premier League sides.
Manchester United don’t need guys for the future right now
But Nicol does not think the Wales international is the type of player Solskjaer needs to bring in.
He claims United, who finished sixth in the Premier League last season, need proven quality players instead.
“This is your guy for the future,” Nicol said.
“This is who your guy is.
“But guess what, Manchester United don’t need guys for the future right now.
“They need people who can come in and step on the field and make a difference.
“And unfortunately, as good a prospect as Daniel James is, he’s not doing that.”
Former West Ham goalkeeper Shaka Hislop says there is still plenty of time for United to get the right business done this summer.
But he cannot see them bridging the gap to champions Manchester City and runners up Liverpool anytime soon.
“It’s the first week of June so there’s a lot of time between now and the start of the season for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to make some kind of significant moves in moving Manchester United closer to the top four,” Hislop said.
“I don’t see them closing the gap on the top two.”
James has made 43 career appearances for Swansea, scoring seven goals.
