How devastated Son Heung-min reacted to Tottenham Champions League final loss to Liverpool
TOTTENHAM star Son Heung-min was left visibly distraught after his side’s defeat by Liverpool in the Champions League final.
Champions League: Son appears devastated after Tottenham loss
Spurs were beaten 2-0 in Madrid despite being arguably the better side for much of the game.
And it was all too much for their South Korean forward who could not bring himself to talk to reporters after a cagey 90 minutes against their Premier League rivals.
In the behind-the-scenes footage, Son, 26, can be seen walking past a pack of reporters and closing his eyes as a microphone is put in front of him.
Humble as ever, Son apologises to the waiting journalists before heading for the exit clearly upset.
And fans of both clubs rallied in a show of support for him on social media.
“That saddens me, head up Son literally, amazing human & player. Just unlucky tonight that’s all. No biggy,” said one Liverpool supporter on Twitter.
Another agreed: “He's top notch. Would love him at Liverpool.”
“So humble,” said another.
An Arsenal fan even got in on the art, adding: “Wow and he’s still as polite as ever.”
A Spurs fan agreed: “Damnit. No. I can't bear looking at this.”
Son and his Spurs team-mates were facing an uphill battle from the very start after Moussa Sissoko was judged to have handled in the area after only 25 seconds.
Mohamed Salah smashed home the resulting penalty but both sides appeared to retreat into their shells on the big stage.
Spurs had chances to equalise before Divock Origi sealed Liverpool’s sixth European title as he drove into the bottom corner with his left foot in the 87th minute.
Boss Mauricio Pochettino has vowed to come back stronger and says he is desperate to get back on to Europe’s biggest stage.
"You want to experience this again and repeat it. It is the best game in the world after the World Cup," he said.
"It's about trying, believing and building the journey so it happens again as soon as possible."
