Man United: David De Gea's future is uncertain says pundit
De Gea has been struggling in recent months and has come in for criticism for several high profile blunders.
But former United coach Hoek still thinks he’s one of the top stoppers in the game.
But his comments about playing for Manchester City and Barcelona will annoy United fans.
He believes the Spain No 1 is good enough with his feet to fit in at the Etihad or the Nou Camp.
"I worked with him for two years at Manchester United and I must say he's at a really high level," Hoek told Marca.
"It's not easy to play three games a week as is demanded in England and maintain a high level.
"Particularly when anyone can beat anyone there. But he does it.
"That's why it's unusual to see him make mistakes at international level. De Gea could play for Barcelona or [Manchester] City because playing with his feet is among his many qualities."
Man United: David De Gea to PSG ‘makes sense’ says Hislop
De Gea’s future is uncertain with just one year left on his current deal and links with PSG and Real Madrid.
De Gea wants parity with top earner Alexis Sanchez and is stalling on talks over a new deal.
United will undergo a big overhaul this summer after missing out on the Champions League under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
The Norwegian replaced Jose Mourinho and was confirmed as permanent boss in March after taking over as caretaker initially.
He is expected to sign several players in the summer and could even have to look for a new keeper if De Gea refuses to sign a new deal.
