Richard Keys laughs at 'angry' Liverpool fans after Virgil van Dijk comments
LIVERPOOL fans have been told to ‘calm down’ by presenter Richard Keys after he claimed that Virgil van Dijk shouldn’t have won PFA Players' Player of the Year - because the season is still ongoing.
PFA Awards: Virgil Van Dijk 'proud' to win Player of the Year
Liverpool fans were in uproar after Keys shared a blog post with the message: ‘Why is van Dijk PoY?’.
Keys responded to the angry supporters with a tweet that riled fans even more.
He said: “You guys on Merseyside are so angry. It makes me laugh.
“You all miss the point entirely - which has nothing to do with van Dijk. Calm down….”
That comment came after Liverpool supporters had sent a barrage of messages his way.
One fan said: “Richard Keys causing controversy just to stay relevant.”
“The fact you get paid to write this tripe is hilarious.” added another.
A third said: “Why are you still on our TV screens.”
“Why are you still allowed to present a football show??” Said a fourth.
The former Sky Sports presenter wrote that Van Dijk may well be deserving of the award, but that it shouldn’t have been voted for until the end of the season.
He argues that even though Van Dijk has already be selected, if he goes the season without winning a trophy then the result may have been different.
“Virgil van Dijk has had a fabulous season - but we don’t know yet if he’ll be topping it off with one, two or no medals at all,” Keys wrote on richardajkeys.com.
“What if Raheem Sterling steers City over the line with two hat-tricks on the next two weekends?
“And I have to say, as good as Van Dijk has been so has Aymeric Laporte at the heart of City’s defence.”
Keys was sacked by Sky Sports in 2011 after making comments about assistant referee Sian Massey, which some Liverpool fans were quick to mention.
In the blog, he went on to use Paul Pogba as an example of the flawed voting system used by the PFA.
He added: “I don’t understand how the PFA can make their awards before the season has ended.
“And as for Paul Pogba in the PL team of the year? Most United fans wouldn’t even have him in their team.
“It’s nonsense. Absolute nonsense. If the PFA really are undergoing ‘root and branch’ change - then this is one area that they need to sort out before next season.
“The PFA say they need time to ‘collect the votes’.
“Are they serious? Time to collect votes....? I’m writing this blog - and you’ll be reading it less than 10 seconds after I publish.”
