The FIVE-WORD clue Jurgen Klopp and Mario Gotze could reunite at Liverpool this summer
BORUSSIA DORTMUND ace Mario Gotze has opened the door for a reunion with Jurgen Klopp by revealing he is still in touch with the Liverpool boss.
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp denies Mario Gotze transfer rumours
Gotze played under Klopp at Dortmund having risen through the Bundesliga giants’ youth system as a kid.
But he turned his back on Dortmund and the man who handed him his senior debut by leaving for rivals Bayern Munich in 2013.
Gotze helped Bayern win seven trophies, though his development was stunted during a personally difficult three-year stint in Bavaria.
The 26-year-old returned to Dortmund in 2016, by which point Klopp had departed and taken charge of Liverpool.
Jurgen Klopp was credited with interest in taking Gotze to Anfield when it became apparent his time at Bayern was up.
Gotze has now confirmed he spoke with his former gaffer about potentially joining Liverpool.
"[Klopp] knew that I wanted to leave Bayern [in 2016]," Gotze told the latest edition of German magazine Sport Bild.
"Of course, we talked. He knows me very well and that I am always looking for new challenges."
I often speak to Kloppo.
Gotze’s admission that he is always interested in fresh opportunities preceded the revelation that he and Klopp still chat.
"I often speak to Kloppo," Gotze added.
"He brought me to the first team when I was 17 and he made it all possible. We never stopped talking."
Gotze is under contract at Borussia Dortmund until the summer of 2020, with Signal Iduna Park chiefs sure to be keen to tie him down for longer.
The playmaker refused to commit his future to Dortmund, however, when asked about the situation
Instead, Gotze focussed on the Bundesliga title race Dortmund and Bayern are currently engaged in.
"Right now the sporting situation has absolute priority," Gotze said.
"We have the chance to win the title. Everything else comes after."
Dortmund are currently two points better off than Bayern at the top of the Bundesliga.
Saturday’s Der Klassiker derby between the two sides could decide where the title ends up this season.
Liverpool, meanwhile, are engaged in their own scrap at the top of the table with reigning Premier League champions Manchester City.
Klopp is expected to splash the cash on reinforcements this summer, regardless of the outcome of the Reds’ battle with City.
