Man Utd backed to sign long-term transfer target despite Ole Gunnar Solskjaer start
MANCHESTER UNITED should still sign Leicester and England defender Harry Maguire - despite improvement at the back under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Man Utd: Harry Maguire ‘a good fit’ for defence says Hislop
That is the opinion of ESPN FC pundit and former West Ham goalkeeper Shaka Hislop.
Maguire was a target of Manchester United last summer when Jose Mourinho was in charge.
However, a deal never materialised for the Leicester man.
Maguire has once again emerged as a target for the upcoming close season, with a £65million move rumoured.
So as a result, as much improved as United’s centre-backs have been, I still think this is a good fit
Hislop believes the 26-year-old would improve the United defence, despite the form of Victor Lindelof and Chris Smalling since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took the reins in December.
“I think he’d be a hit,” Hislop said of Maguire.
“I liked this link when it first cropped up, what, 12 months ago.
“I continue to like it even though I will say that Solskjaer’s gotten a lot better return out of the centre-halves that he has at his disposal now.
“But I think Maguire continues to grow in confidence and stature in the English game.
“I’m not sure that Manchester United have the centre-backs that they want to stay with long term.
“So as a result, as much improved as United’s centre-backs have been, I still think this is a good fit, and I’ll put that down as a hit.
“I think Maguire has improved and this is a good acquisition for Manchester United."
Hislop believes Solskjaer deserves to be appointed full-time United boss after the start he has had.
“I think Solskjaer’s staying on, which I’ve said for some time," he continued.
“I just think he’s done more than enough to stay on as United manager to be given an additional chance and a transfer window to try and work some of that magic.”
Maguire started for England in their Euro 2020 Qualifier against Czech Republic on Friday.
