Man Utd hit back at Barcelona ahead of Champions League tie with statement fans will LOVE
MANCHESTER UNITED have responded to Barcelona’s extortionate ticket prices by increasing the cost for Barca fans at Old Trafford so they can subsidise their own supporters.
Man United: Solskjaer is ‘looking forward’ to Barcelona clash
United host Barca in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final on April 10 and will increase the price of away tickets in line with what Barca are charging.
The La Liga leaders are charging United fans £102 per ticket for the return leg at the Nou Camp on April 16.
And United have confirmed they will charge the same to Spanish fans so they can use the extra money to help their own supporters cover the cost of traveling to Barcelona.
“In this instance we believe that our travelling supporters are again being subjected to increased/excessive ticket prices from the host club,” a statement read.
“We have again taken the difficult decision to charge FC Barcelona fans for the home leg at Old Trafford the same amount that FC Barcelona are charging for the away fixture (£102).
“We will use the additional revenue gained from this to subsidise our travelling support by paying the £27 price difference for each of our travelling supporters.”
That means it will cost the 4,610 allocated United fans £75 to go and watch their side in Spain.
It marks a return to Barcelona for manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for the first time since he scored the winner for United in the Champions League final against Bayern Munich in 1999.
And the Norwegian has said he cannot wait to return to the scene of his greatest footballing achievement.
“It was the biggest night I’ve had in football,” he said.
“Of course, for all of us in that team it was an unbelievable night.
“It’s a great stadium . . . and, of course, we met them in the group stages as well that year — 3-3 both home and away.
“So this will be a good game.”
He added: “We want these games against the biggest clubs.
“We had the finals against them in 2009 and 2011 and the semi-final in 2008 when Scholesy scored and it’s those games that our supporters and this club crave.
“We are looking forward to this one.”
