Arsenal news: Unai Emery reveals Gunners secret weapon for Man Utd showdown
ARSENAL boss Unai Emery is hoping the fans can be the difference when they take on Manchester United today.
The Spaniard is looking for a reaction from his players after their midweek 3-1 defeat to Rennes in the Europa League.
Emery is hoping the home crowd at the Emirates can create an atmosphere that will help inspire Arsenal to secure all three points on Sunday as the battle for Champions League spots heats up.
After Tottenham’s 2-1 loss to Southampton on Saturday only five points now separates third and sixth places in table.
Arsenal, who are currently fifth in league, go into the game one point behind United but they have a better goal difference by two goals.
First, it will be mostly our supporters and stadium, creating together a big atmosphere
If they come away with a win it will put them in fourth place and only one point off Spurs.
“We know United are doing very well,” said Emery.
“The most important is our capacity to react to the Rennes defeat.
“First, it will be mostly our supporters and stadium, creating together a big atmosphere.”
Arsenal: Unai Emery reflects on Europa League loss to Rennes
Emery insisted his target for Arsenal is to return to playing Champions League football.
He knows the outcome of the game on Sunday will be crucial as afterwards there will only be eight league games remaining.
“Our target is to play in the Champions League and we know it is not easy,” said Emery.
“We have two possibilities even if we know it is going to be difficult.
“With this responsibility the players are optimists. We can come with positive spirit and do it. I want to find positive energy.”
Man United: Solskjaer compares Rashford to Cristiano Ronaldo
United come into this game with interim manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looking to secure the job on a permanent basis.
And his claim for the top job was helped after United’s 3-1 victory over PSG in the Champions League.
But the Red Devils could suffer from a European ‘hangover’ after enduring emotional rollercoaster following Marcus Rashford's 94th minute game-winning penalty at the Parc des Princes.
Arsenal take on United at the Emirates with kick-off at 4.30pm.
