Man Utd news: Ed Woodward sent transfer message by Quinn after PSG 'reality check'
MANCHESTER UNITED must spend big in the summer if they are to reach the level of the likes of PSG.
Manchester United need better players claims Micky Quinn
That is the opinion of talkSPORT pundit and former Newcastle striker Micky Quinn.
Manchester United suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of PSG on Tuesday in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie.
There was renewed optimism at Old Trafford ahead of the match after a stunning return to form under interim boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
The Red Devils had won 10 of their 11 games under the stewardship of their former striker heading into the match.
Manchester United, to get to that level, have to have a lot more, and that includes better players as well
But goals from Presnel Kimpembe and Kylian Mbappe have put United’s chances of progression in doubt.
Liverpool fan Quinn recognises the improvement at United in recent weeks.
However, he says PSG were on a completely different level and United need better players to compete with them.
“When it was drawn out of the hat it was a case of ‘put the suits back boys, you won’t be progressing through’,” Quinn said of United.
“But they’ve improved their form, they’ve played some good football, scored some good goals.
“But I think Tuesday was a reality check, even Solskjaer said that himself.
“They started well, they started bright, but once PSG got a foothold in the game, they were outclassed, outclassed.
“The back four were ordinary for Manchester United, they were made to look ordinary by [Angel] Di Maria galloping down the left wing, Mbappe outclassing and outpacing the defence.
“They were outclassed.
“I think the first thing that came to mind after the 90 minutes, Manchester United, to get to that level, have to have a lot more, and that includes better players as well.”
United are next in action on Monday when they visit Chelsea in the FA Cup fifth round at Stamford Bridge.
United overcame Arsenal 3-1 in the previous round.
