Newport goalkeeper RACES off pitch as wife goes into labour during FA Cup clash
NEWPORT goalkeeper Joe Day raced off the pitch during their FA Cup win over Middlesbrough - to be at the birth of his children!
Newport, who are bottom of League Two, sprung a major FA Cup surprise by beating Middlesbrough 2-0.
And, for goalkeeper Day, the event was memorable for another reason.
The shot-stopper was seen sprinting off the pitch after being informed that his wife had gone into labour.
Newport's Twitter account said: “@NewportCounty goalkeeper Joe Day's wife has been close to giving birth to twins for days.
“Tonight, she went into labour during The Exiles' 2-0 win over @Boro.
“At the FT whistle, Joe raced straight down the tunnel to be with his wife.
“Good luck Joe and family!”
Newport will now face Manchester City in the next round but, firstly, is a home clash with Mansfield on Saturday.
After the game Newport defender Mickey Demetriou said: "It's brilliant, we thoroughly deserved it (the 2-0 win).
"Look what it means to the club, it's massive. It was a sell-out.
"We've got Manchester City at home in the next round and what a tie it will be for us.
"We could have been 3-0 up by half-time and we dug deep. We showed our quality.
"It's another big team for us to come to Rodney Parade. It will be massive for the club again."
