Real Madrid president Florentino Perez to quit influential board over VAR controversy
REAL MADRID president Florentino Perez is considering QUITTING the Royal Spanish Football Federation board over recent VAR controversies.
Real Madrid president Perez has only just returned to the board of the RFEF.
The president holds plenty of weight in discussions around Spanish football and the set-up of La Liga.
But Real may lose an influential figure in the RFEF should he fulfil his threat to quit.
According to Spanish newspaper AS, Perez is fuming about a number of refereeing decisions that have not gone his way.
The president was not happy a penalty was not given for Vinicius Junior in a clash with Real Sociedad on January 6.
He was also furious that VAR may have got a decision wrong in Sergio Canales’ goal for Real Betis at the weekend.
Real Madrid lost 2-0 to Sociedad but did beat Betis 2-1 thanks to a late Dani Ceballos strike.
AS claim Perez could exit his post at the RFEF just a month after he returned following an exile triggered through differences between himself and Angel María Villar.
Perez is not averse to controversy and triggered a national debate over the summer when he signed Spain manager Julen Lopetegui to be their new boss on the eve of the World Cup.
It led to Spain sacking Lopetegui and the manager breaking down in tears on his unveiling at the Bernabeu.
Perez has already sacked Lopetegui and is now seeking a new manager for the summer.
Santiago Solari is in charge for now but Los Blancos have a list of candidates to come in on a full-time basis.
Mauricio Pochettino and Antonio Conte have been linked, with Jose Mourinho and Laurent Blanc are both out of work.
As for Real, they are preparing for Wednesday’s Copa del Rey last-16 second leg with Leganes on Wednesday.
Real won the first leg at home 3-0 last week and are heavy favourites to progress.
