Liverpool news: Jurgen Klopp reveals why he does NOT care about seven-point lead
JURGEN KLOPP believes Liverpool’s win over Brighton was ‘massive’ for their hopes of winning the Premier League title.
The Reds registered a narrow 1-0 win over Chris Hughton’s side at the Amex Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
A second-half penalty from Mohamed Salah ensured all three points went back to Merseyside and saw Klopp’s troops maintain their grip on top spot.
Victory over Brighton saw Liverpool stretch their lead at the top of the table to seven points, though second-placed Manchester City do have a game in hand on the Reds.
Liverpool were from their usual deadly self against a gusty Brighton, who have yet to win a league game in 2019.
But nevertheless, Klopp was delighted with his side’s performance on the south coast.
"It was very hard earned and that's how it is. A massive, massive game," the German said. "Everyone knows how difficult it is to go to Brighton.
"You have to be creative against a really good organised side with the counter-attack threat in your mind – plus the long balls that are always 50 per cent situations.
"It was a really mature performance from my side. This season that is a new skill and we have to keep that.
It means nothing, we take all the points we can
"The second half was much better. We learned from the first half. So I like the performance.
"It's not an opera of football but it’s still a really nice song."
Although Liverpool are seven points clear of City, Klopp is refusing rest on his laurels.
"It means nothing,” he said of Liverpool’s seven-point lead. “We take all the points we can.
"We have 57 now – that's the situation and that's cool.
"We all know the difference will be tomorrow and on Monday night. We can only win our games."
Liverpool return to action next Saturday, welcoming 14th-placed Crystal Palace to Anfield.
