Chelsea transfer news: Gabriele Marcotti makes claim over Gonzalo Higuain deal
CHELSEA signing Gonzalo Higuain this month would make no sense, claims Italian football expert Gabriele Marcotti.
Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri is keen on a reunion with Argentina international Higuain.
Sarri managed Higuain for one season when the pair were at Napoli, with the striker scoring 36 goals in 35 Serie A appearances.
However, now at 31, Marcotti believes the striker would be an expensive short-term option for Chelsea.
He claims Higuain would be the fourth highest earner in the Premier League if he did complete a move to Stamford Bridge.
It just doesn’t seem to make any kind of sense for Chelsea to go and bring somebody in in that position
And for that reason Marcotti does not think it would be a smart piece of business by the west London club.
“Everybody’s linking Higuain to Chelsea and obviously Higuain had that tremendous season with Sarri at Napoli where he scored 36 goals,” Marcotti said.
“But I’m not 100 per cent convinced for one simple reason.
“Gonzalo Higuain, if he comes to Chelsea, he will instantly be the fourth highest paid player in the Premier League.
“He makes an enormous amount of money, he’s the wrong side of 30.
“He’s got several years left [in his career], he’s not going to take a pay cut to come here.
“It just doesn’t seem to make any kind of sense for Chelsea to go and bring somebody in in that position.”
Higuain is not the only striker Chelsea have been linked with in this window.
Reports claim they are willing to spend around £50million on Bournemouth and England ace Callum Wilson.
West Ham’s want-away forward Marko Arnautovic is also a reported target.
Alvaro Morata looks set to leave Chelsea if they can find a replacement.
Meanwhile, Michy Batshuayi is set to return to England after having his loan spell at Valencia cut short.
