Harry Kane offside: Was Harry Kane offside? Tottenham vs Chelsea goal controversy
HARRY KANE scored the crucial goal during Tottenham vs Chelsea but did VAR get the big offside decision wrong? Express Sport has all the pictures for you to decide.
Maurizio Sarri: Harry Kane was clearly OFFSIDE
Harry Kane fired home the crucial penalty to give Tottenham the lead over Chelsea in their two-leg Carabao Cup semi-final tie.
However, the goal has been shrouded in controversy following two VAR decisions in the build-up to his penalty strike.
Kane was initially ruled offside as he burst away from the Chelsea defence before being wiped out by goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Referee Michael Oliver consulted VAR and the offside decision was overturned, resulting in a penalty for Tottenham which Kane executed perfectly.
After the game, Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri was furious about the call and claimed Kane was ‘clearly’ offside.
“In Italy there is VAR. In the first season, it was a disaster. The referees did not know how to use the system,” he said.
“I think at the moment the referees [in England] are not ready to use the system in the right way.
“For example, from the pictures on our camera, Kane was offside, clearly offside.
“And what is important is the linesman stopped running with play – he didn’t follow the ball.
“So for the players on the pitch they clearly thought it was offside.”
Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino surprisingly criticised VAR despite it working in his favour during the game.
He said: “To be honest, I am not happy with that system.
“I hope we have time to develop the system. It needs to be a tool to improve the game. Football must be fair.
“Today it was a good decision for Tottenham, but we were waiting five minutes.
“Of course, people will say this guy is crazy but I’m telling you when I get the benefit.
“When it does not benefit us it is easy to complain, but I think today I need to be clear and honest and I am not happy.”
The second leg will take place at Stamford Bridge on Thursday, January 24.
