Lukaku returned to the bench for the win over Bournemouth on Sunday and scored within minutes of replacing Rashford.
Rashford was an injury doubt for the visit to Newcastle but maintained his spot in the team, leaving Lukaku on the bench again.
I think he’s earned his chance, he deserves it up top, he gives them something different and he’s a fantastic player Marcus Rashford
And Neville has explained why Solskjaer made that decision.
“He gives them mobility,” Neville said of Rashford on Sky Sports.
“I think it was something to be fair that happened a couple of times before Ole came in.
“They just needed more energy up front, Lukaku hasn’t been at his best this season.
“Big World Cup, sometimes that happens post-World Cup, I know Marcus went to the World Cup as well.
“I think he’s earned his chance, he deserves it up top, he gives them something different and he’s a fantastic player Marcus Rashford.
“He’s on the right trajectory to become something really special for Manchester United.”
Former Newcastle striker Shola Ameobi agrees with Neville that Rashford can go a long way in the game.
“This kid has got it all hasn’t he,” Ameobi said.
“He’s got the pace, he’s got the intelligence.
“He’s not just scoring, but you look at the goal he set up for Pogba’s first goal the other day.
“He’s got so much ability but he works hard as well, works so hard for the team.
“I think he can be anything he wanted to be.”
