Man Utd news: ‘I thought it was already done’ - pundit makes big transfer claim
MANCHESTER UNITED will finally land Toby Alderwerield after failing to sign the Tottenham man last summer.
Alderweireld to Man United 'makes sense' says Hislop
That is the verdict of ESPN FC pundit and former West Ham goalkeeper Shaka Hislop.
Alderweireld has been linked with a move to Manchester United for the majority of 2018.
The Belgian fell out of favour at Tottenham last season after rejecting a new contract at the north London side.
But despite United’s interest in the close season, Alderweireld remained a Spurs player.
That makes a whole lot of sense given Manchester United’s problems
He has been a regular under Mauricio Pochettino this term, making 17 outings in all competitions.
But he is still to put pen to paper over a new deal.
Alderweireld has a clause in his contract allowing him to leave for £25million next summer.
Hislop admits he thought Alderweireld would have become a Tottenham player this year.
But he can see a deal happening at the end of this campaign.
“I thought it had been done last summer,” Hislop said.
“It didn’t and as usual Daniel Levy holding out.
“But the clause in his contract says he can leave next summer for £25m.
"That is a snip for Alderweireld.
“He seems to be holding out, I don’t think he will sign for Spurs again.
“That makes a whole lot of sense given Manchester United’s problems.”
Alderweireld has scored six goals in 115 appearances for Tottenham.
