Man Utd news: The ONE condition United would appoint Gareth Southgate as manager - Adam
MANCHESTER UNITED would only appoint Gareth Southgate as their manager if he won both the World Cup AND the European Championships with England.
That is the astonishing opinion of Stoke midfielder and former Scotland international Charlie Adam.
Southgate has worked wonders as England boss since replacing Sam Allardyce, initially as caretaker, in 2016.
The 48-year-old led the Three Lions to the World Cup semi-finals earlier this year - the first time they had reached the last four of a major competition in over 20 years.
Southgate’s side have now reached the finals of the UEFA Nations League, due to take place next June, after beating Croatia 2-1 at Wembley on Sunday.
If you’re Man United, is Gareth Southgate the name? Is he the big name that a club like Man United would hire?
However, he has not managed at club level since being sacked as Middlesbrough boss in 2009.
And when discussing if Southgate could take over at a top team in the Premier League in the future, Adam said he is not a big enough name to manage a club the size of Manchester United.
“He’s been out of the club game for a long time,” Adam said on BBC Radio 5 Live.
“To walk back into it, it would be difficult. He’s done a wonderful job with England, he has done.
“But I still think he needs to win the World Cup and the Euros before he even thinks about getting a top-four job.
“I don’t think (winning the Nations League) would get you the Man United job, no. No I don’t think so.
“If you’re Man United, is Gareth Southgate the name? Is he the big name that a club like Man United would hire?
“No I don’t think they would. No chance, no chance.
“There’s so many big names out there they can take. I don’t think they would employ him.
“You would have to go and do it at Man United for 50-60 games a season.
"There’s a big difference.
“No (Jose Mourinho is not doing that at United), but he’s Jose Mourinho.”
