Man Utd news: Juan Sebastian Veron delivers damning verdict of Jose Mourinho era
JOSE MOURINHO needs time at Man United according to former midfielder Juan Sebastian Veron.
The Argentine spent two years at Old Trafford playing under Sir Alex Ferguson before making a controversial switch to Chelsea.
Despite his sour United exit, Veron very much remains attached to the club and keeps a close eye on results.
United have endured a strange season so far which has seen Mourinho on the brink of losing his job.
The team had appeared to have turned a corner after beating Juventus in Turin in the Champions League with two late goals.
But the result was followed up with a 3-1 defeat against Manchester City in the Manchester derby.
United are now 12 points behind their rivals who lead the way in the Premier League, they are also seven points adrift of the top four.
Veron though, still feels Mourinho deserves more time to turn things around and push the club on.
"The departure of Ferguson had a really bad impact on them," Veron said at Soccerex USA.
"They have not been able to find their way yet, having tried some changes already. But they are a big club so hopefully they will find their [football] idea in the future.
"Mourinho is a great manager. For me, he really is. Maybe he could be the right one but after all Ferguson achieved at the club, he is going to need some time in order to implement his [football] idea."
Since the retirement of Ferguson in 2013, United have struggled to mount any serious title challenges and have spent each season battling to secure Champions League qualification.
Mourinho did win three trophies in his first season, the Community Shield, League Cup and Europa League but has failed to build upon those successes.
The Portuguese’s current contract is due to run until 2020 but his fate could be decided this season should his side continue their current slump.
Tensions boiled over at the start of the season when Mourinho stripped Paul Pogba of the Man Utd vice-captaincy.
The duo were then at the centre of a heated exchange on the training ground which was caught by cameras.
Mourinho and Pogba have seemed to have put differences aside for now but it remains unclear if both of their futures lie with Man United.
