Xhaka was moved into defence by Unai Emery as Arsenal went in search of a win against Leicester on Monday.
And with Nacho Monreal and Sead Kolasinac out with injury, Emery has opted to play the Swiss midfielder at left-back again.
There are six changes from the Arsenal team which started the win over Leicester.
Sokratis comes in at centre-back in place of Shkodran Mustafi.
Matteo Guendouzi and Mohamed Elneny start in central midfield with Aaron Ramsey, who captains the team, just ahead of them.
In attack, Alex Iwobi, Mesut Ozil and Alexandre Lacazette drop out and Danny Welbeck and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to come in.
Arsenal are looking to win their 11th match in a row in all competitions.
Sporting are fifth in the Primeira Liga having won four and lost two of their seven matches this season.
