Man Utd news: Ed Woodward may sack Jose Mourinho in the summer as fresh details emerge
MANCHESTER UNITED chief Ed Woodward may sack Jose Mourinho in the summer to save himself a small fortune, reports have claimed.
Manchester United vice executive-chairman Woodward is under pressure to act despite Mourinho buying himself more time on Saturday.
The Red Devils looked destined to axe the 55-year-old, but a stirring comeback against Newcastle has seen that decision delayed.
Manchester United will have to pay Mourinho a huge £29million to sack their boss now, in October.
The club only gave him a new contract in January, something the manager recently claimed was solely their decision.
“There is too much talking. I have begun to feel that if it rains in London tomorrow it is my fault. If people don’t like Brexit it is my fault,” he said.
“I have been blamed for extending my contract until 2020 but I didn’t point a pistol at the club, they wanted to give it to me.
“I am 55 years old now and I can live with it but some of my boys are not coping quite so well.”
Yet Spanish outlet Ok Diario claim United may not sack Mourinho just yet.
Instead, they may wait until the end of the campaign, where they will have to pay him just £9.6m.
Woodward has insisted Mourinho will be given time.
And history suggests United are more likely to part with the 55-year-old when Champions League football becomes mathematically impossible.
In 2014, David Moyes was allowed to continue despite dire results.
And United only axed the Scot when it was confirmed they had missed out on a place in the top four.
It was a similar story two years later with Louis van Gaal.
The Dutchman failed to live up to expectations but did land the club the FA Cup title.
He was also popular among players, particularly Wayne Rooney and Anthony Martial.
But Woodward sacked him due to the fact they finished fifth, behind Manchester City in fourth.
