Jose Mourinho: The REAL reason Jorge Mendes met Man Utd chiefs on Friday
JOSE MOURINHO's agent Jorge Mendes did meet Manchester United officials on Friday evening - but not to discuss the manager's future at the club, according to reports.
Reports in recent days have suggested Mourinho is on his way out of Old Trafford regardless of the result against Newcastle this evening.
Manchester United chiefs have since denounced these suggestions, labelling them as 'nonsense'.
But details have now emerged of Mourinho's agent Mendes' meeting with senior figures on Friday evening in London.
However, according to the Independent, the GestiFute founder was simply meeting United figures to discuss the contract renewal of David de Gea, another one of his clients.
The Spaniard has the option in his current deal to sign for a further year, and Mendes was in the UK to thrash out terms.
De Gea's contract is set to expire next summer.
But the goalkeeper has indicated he is happy to stay at the club and put pen to paper on a new offer.
As for Mourinho, his future at Old Trafford looks a lot more bleak.
The Portuguese boss has made enemies of some key first-team stars, including Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial.
Various reports also claim Eric Bailly, Marcus Rashford, Alexis Sanchez and Andreas Pereira have also clashed with the boss.
Zinedine Zidane remains the favourite to get the job on a full-time basis.
But United have this morning publicly backed their man ahead of today's visit from Newcastle.
Mourinho reportedly demanded the club support him after the Daily Mirror's damning report broke on Friday evening.
The embattled coach addressed the media yesterday but only took five short questions in a press conference that lasted just over three minutes.
