Liverpool news: Virgil van Dijk worry revealed on radio ahead of Chelsea, Man City games
LIVERPOOL’s chances of success this season depend heavily on Virgil van Dijk - so his injury is a concern ahead of matches against rivals Chelsea and Manchester City.
Jurgen Klopp: Virgil van Dijk’s injury shouldn’t be too serious
That is the opinion of former England and Premier League manager Sam Allardyce.
Van Dijk was forced off early in the second half of Liverpool’s 3-0 win over Southampton on Saturday.
The Dutchman had played every minute for the Reds so far this season before the incident.
Van Dijk has a bruised rib and could be a doubt for Saturday’s trip to face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
How long he is out is a key element for Liverpool’s success at the moment
Defending champions Manchester City are then next on the agenda in the Premier League.
And Allardyce admits Liverpool must keep the 27-year-old fit to harbour hopes of winning trophies this term.
“I think they lost Van Dijk this weekend,” Allardyce said on talkSPORT.
“How long he is out is a key element for Liverpool’s success at the moment.
“Yes I know (Liverpool face Chelsea and City next). So it’s all going to pan out.”
Speaking after the win over Southampton, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was not too concerned with Van Dijk’s injury.
“He already had a bruise in the ribs before the PSG game, which is very uncomfortable and today he got another hit there,” Klopp said.
“It’s not cool but should not be too serious.
"It should be absolutely OK, hopefully. I didn’t hear anything different.”
The victory propelled Liverpool back to the summit of the Premier League.
Goals from Joel Matip and Mohamed Salah and an own goal from Wesley Hoedt were enough to see of Saints.
Chelsea’s goalless draw with West Ham on Sunday meant Liverpool remain top until next weekend’s action.
