Real Madrid news: Courtois or Navas? Lopetegui talks Champions League goalkeeper decision
REAL MADRID boss Julen Lopetegui has refused to confirm who will be Real Madrid’s Champions League goalkeeper.
Keylor Navas was between the sticks for each of Real Madrid’s three consecutive Champions League wins.
Since then, the Costa Rica international has lost his spot to new signing Thibaut Courtois.
Despite the Belgian’s arrival, Navas has stayed put at the Bernabeu and has been given a chance to fight for his place.
Lopetegui refused to reveal in his pre-match press conference who will start in goal against Roma.
"Navas is training very well," Lopetegui said.
"He's doing what we thought he would do and what he's going to do throughout the season – fight and compete.
"I'm not going to say anything about [who will start in goal]. We have fantastic options and whatever decision we make is going to be a good one.
"I'm not going to say who is going to play and who is not going to play."
The comments suggest there is a genuine possibility that Navas maybe Real Madrid’s goalkeeper in the Champions League.
The rotational system has been been used by many in Europe’s elite club competition in order to keep everybody happy.
Last year’s finalists Liverpool started the season with Loris Karius as their Champions League goalkeeper, with Simon Mignolet playing league matches.
Barcelona have also used this rotation before with Claudio Bravo and Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
Thibaut Courtois will want to be Real Madrid’s No 1 in every competition after making the £35m switch from Chelsea.
He has already won La Liga with Atletico and will be looking to get his hands on a Champions League medal after suffering final heartbreak against his new club in 2014.
