Man Utd news: This is why fans must give Jose Mourinho time at Old Trafford - Schmeichel
MANCHESTER UNITED boss Jose Mourinho needs to be given time to win the Premier League due to the added pressure that comes with managing at Old Trafford, claims Peter Schmeichel.
The Red Devils chief has been under-fire of late after a turbulent start to the season.
Mourinho looks to be on course to steady the ship at Old Trafford after Sunday's 2-0 win at Burnley and repeated public efforts to show his appreciation to the fans.
And Schmeichel has backed the Portuguese coach to win the Premier League with his Manchester United, insisting Mourinho simply needs time.
"When we give him time and we keep our patience, with the players, with him, with everybody then we can focus on our progression," he told Sky Sports.
So when we give him time and patience and we understand it's a period where we have to develop into where we want to be
"Last season we finished runners-up after finishing fifth the season before.
"Straight into the Champions League this year.
"We won the Europa League with Jose, two FA Cup final as well.
"So when we give him time and patience and we understand it's a period where we have to develop into where we want to be.
"And then I think will we get there [winning the Premier League.]"
And Schmeichel feels sympathy for Mourinho, claiming that he is managing a club which is universally popular, which brings added pressure.
"Now you can't just walk into Old Trafford," he said.
"There is many things you need to get used to.
"I still think he must think 'wow this place is so special.'
"Because of what happens around it and how important it is to people in Manchester and around the world.
"Everywhere he goes he will meet Manchester United fans that live and breath United.
"So there is nowhere he can go where Manchester United is not with him."
United are back in action against high-flying Watford when club football returns midway through September.
