Real Madrid transfer news: Sevilla react with £18m deal after Mariano joins Bernabeu
REAL MADRID have confirmed the signing of Lyon striker Mariano from under Sevilla’s nose - and the Andalusian club have wasted little time sourcing a replacement target.
Real Madrid today unveiled Mariano before the Spanish transfer deadline.
They exercised a first-refusal option to bring the striker back to Madrid after Lyon accepted an offer from Sevilla.
Mariano, 25, could head straight into Julen Lopetegui’s first team this season.
But Sevilla have not hung around sulking over their failed transfer.
The club have confirmed the capture of Netherlands international Quincy Promes from Spartak Moscow.
The deal will cost £18m and sees Promes head to La Liga for the first time in his career.
The winger started his career at FC Twente and moved to Spartak in 2014.
He has already played five games for Spartak this season and scored in their 2-1 win over Dinamo Moscow last weekend.
His arrival at Sevilla will boost manager Pablo Machin’s attacking options as the club seek to battle Real, Atletico Madrid and Barcelona for the Spanish title.
As for Mariano, he has been granted the No 7 shirt at Real Madrid vacated by Cristiano Ronaldo this summer.
He said: "Julen called me and told me he would be happy if I came back.
"A great part of it was when he told me was counting on me. I want to give the maximum for the team and my teammates and hopefully we can win the maximum number of titles."
