Liverpool news: Michael Owen singles out one new signing as most important
LIVERPOOL star Alisson was the most important signing Jurgen Klopp made in the summer transfer window.
That is the verdict of former Liverpool striker turned BT Sport pundit Michael Owen.
Alisson joined the Reds from Roma in July for £66.8million to become the world’s most expensive goalkeeper.
That fee has since been eclipsed by Chelsea, who signed Kepa Arrizabalaga from Athletic Bilbao for £71.6m
Alisson kept a clean sheet in his first two games for Liverpool, helping them beat West Ham and Crystal Palace.
They’ve strengthened the spine of the team, they’ve strengthened areas they really needed to strengthen, goalkeeper in particular
Klopp’s side are the second favourites to win the Premier League for the first time behind last season’s champions Manchester City.
Owen agrees his former side look strong for the title and has praised the importance of the new signings, especially their new goalkeeper.
“Well I definitely think so (it’s a great chance to win the league),” he said.
“I thought that at the start of the season if I’m honest.
“Of course Manchester City went into the season as favourites.
“But certainly Liverpool, certainly with their signings as well.
“They’ve strengthened the spine of the team, they’ve strengthened areas they really needed to strengthen, goalkeeper in particular.
“Everybody’s excited and not only that, they’re playing with a real style at the moment.
“They’re blasting everyone out of the water at Anfield, they have been for some time.
“I can only see one result again today (against Brighton).”
Brighton were the visitors to Anfield this evening.
Liverpool were looking to be the first team in the league to win their opening three games and therefore go top of the table.
