Man Utd icon Mike Phelan HITS OUT at Paul Pogba saga after Mino Raiola transfer threat
MANCHESTER UNITED star Paul Pogba has been slammed by Mike Phelan over agent Mino Raiola’s transfer threat this morning.
Pogba’s agent Raiola has claimed on Twitter that he would have to “find Pogba a new club” if Paul Scholes was in charge at Old Trafford.
Raiola was responding to criticism aimed at Pogba by Scholes after two games of the Premier League season.
“Paul Scholes should become sports director and advise Woodward to sell Pogba. Would be sleepless nights to find Pogba a new club,” Raiola wrote.
The message has set social media ablaze, with ex-United right-back Gary Neville calling for Pogba to find a new agent.
There was a time when a player’s ability […] generated transfer activity
And Sir Alex Ferguson’s former assistant Phelan has now weighed in on the debate.
In a response to Raiola’s tweet, the 55-year-old said: “There was a time when a player’s ability, consistency, attitude, record and application generated transfer activity.”
The jibe is in clear reference to the ongoing transfer saga surrounding Pogba at Manchester United.
The France international’s relationship with manager Jose Mourinho is said to have hit new lows, despite Mourinho publicly declaring he has happy with his captain.
Pogba had a ‘poor game’ against Brighton says Paul Scholes
Both Real Madrid and Barcelona have been linked with moves for the France international, who helped his country win the World Cup this summer.
A deal before Spain’s August 31 transfer deadline appears unlikely as United would be unable to sign a replacement.
However, Raiola’s threat may worry United bosses who want Pogba - one of the most marketable footballers on the planet - to remain at the club.
United paid a then-world record £89m for Pogba to prise him away from Juventus just two years ago.
They would likely not accept anything less than £100m for the 25-year-old were Barca or Real to come knocking next summer.
As for Phelan, he spent 14 years at Old Trafford as a coach under former manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
The former United defender moved to Norwich in 2014 and became Hull manager in 2016, before being let go by the Tigers a year later.
