Liverpool transfer news: Paul Merson makes claim over new signings
LIVERPOOL boss Jurgen Klopp has made the perfect signings to mount a title challenge this season.
That is the verdict of former Arsenal forward turned Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson.
Liverpool spent over £175million in the summer on four new signings.
Naby Keita arrived from RB Leipzig after agreeing to join the Reds last year.
Brazil internationals Alisson and Fabinho joined for a combined fee of around £110m, with Xherdan Shaqiri making up the quartet.
He’s gone ‘right, I need him, he’s got the legs, he’s going to get forward, I need a goalie’
The new signings have made Liverpool second favourites for the title behind last term’s champions Manchester City.
They started the campaign with a rousing 4-0 win over West Ham at Anfield last Sunday.
Merson says that was the type of game Liverpool needed to win if they harbour hopes of winning the title.
But he has praised the tactics from Klopp in the transfer market for signing the type of players they needed.
“I think Liverpool look a good team and it’s steadily gone along,” Merson said.
“What I like about him (Jurgen Klopp) he’s bought players to go in certain positions.
“He hasn’t just gone ‘oh, I’ll buy Tom, Dick and Harry’ and then when they come think ‘where am I going to play everybody?’.
“He’s gone ‘right, I need him, he’s got the legs, he’s going to get forward, I need a goalie’. They are looking very good.
“I know people said ‘oh they were expected to win last week’ - you’ve got to win.
“They’re the games you have to win when you’re expected to win, and the way they won it.”
Liverpool's next match is against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Monday evening.
The Eagles won their opening game of the campaign 2-0 at Fulham.
