Liverpool news: Jurgen Klopp must do THIS or be considered a failure - Alan Shearer
LIVERPOOL boss Jurgen Klopp has to win a trophy this season to be considered a success, according to former Newcastle striker Alan Shearer.
The Reds missed out on silverware last term after falling to Real Madrid in the Champions League final back in May.
Since then, Klopp has spent upwards of £150m ensuring his squad is ready to bring silverware back to Anfield this season.
Liverpool got off to the perfect start on Sunday, beating West Ham 4-0 in front of their home fans.
And while Shearer acknowledges the club's solid start, he thinks Klopp's spending means the pressure is on to finally win a trophy in England.
They have to win a trophy this season given what they have spent on the team
"It was a good start for Liverpool against West Ham last Sunday," he told Coral.
"They have to win a trophy this season given what they have spent on the team."
Liverpool are fully expected to challenge Manchester City for the Premier League title this term.
And Shearer also admits he can see the Merseyside outfit going close.
"I don’t think they will be far away in the league," he continued.
"The way they played against West Ham, they showed their intentions in terms of how they are going to play.
"Jurgen Klopp does have a poor record in cup finals and I am sure that will be in the back of his mind.
"He can’t do anything about the past so he will be concentrating on the future.
"They have talent right the way through the team.
"They invested in the areas they needed to during the summer, most notably in the goalkeeping position.
"There really are no excuses now for them so they have to go out and win something, Jurgen knows that, and while that expectation brings with it a certain amount of pressure, it’s the sort of pressure every manager wants."
Naby Keita, Fabinho, Xherdan Shaqiri and Alisson were all brought in over the summer as Liverpool strengthened in a number of areas.
The Reds next travel to Selhurst Park to take on Crystal Palace on Monday evening.
