George Russell's hopes of sealing Drivers' Championship glory may be dealt a crushing blow, with the FIA expected to make a major announcement over the next few days. Russell has emerged as the favourite to clinch the end-of-season honours, having made an impressive start to the campaign in Melbourne last week. He won the Australian Grand Prix to lay down an early marker, with his Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli coming home in second place.

Their dominance continued in sprint qualifying at the Chinese Grand Prix, with Russell heading another Silver Arrows one-two. They are currently reaping the benefits of a major power unit advantage over their competitors. Rival teams have accused Mercedes of exploiting a loophole in the new regulations governing compression ratios through clever use of materials technology.

The FIA have already stated that a change to the way the compression ratio is measured will be introduced on June 1, giving Mercedes seven races to pull away from their rivals in the championship.

However, that number is reportedly set to be reduced to five with the upcoming races in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain set to be cancelled due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Crash are reporting that an announcement will be made this weekend.

This will be a crushing blow for Mercedes, who will have fewer opportunities to build their lead before the engine changes are introduced in June.

The races have been in doubt since hostilities began in the Gulf region in late February, following joint strikes from the United States and Israel on Iran, who responded by targeting military sites throughout the Middle East.

Bahrain and Saudi Arabia were among the nations affected by those retaliatory strikes. The cancelled races are not expected to be rescheduled, meaning there will be a four-week gap between the Japanese Grand Prix and the Miami Grand Prix.

This could do further damage to Mercedes' hopes of building up a lead, and subsequently hurt Russell's bid for Drivers' Championship glory, by killing their positive momentum from the early part of the season.

Some rival teams believe the Silver Arrows are currently around three-tenths quicker per lap due to their power unit advantage, but Toto Wolff has insisted that it only amounts to "a few horsepower".

A statement from the FIA last month read: "A significant effort has been invested in finding a solution to the topic of compression ratio. The regulations introduced for 2026 represent one of the biggest changes in recent memory.

"All parties acknowledge that with the introduction of such significant regulatory changes, there are collective learnings to be taken from pre-season testing and the initial rounds of the 2026 championship.

"Further evaluation and technical checks on energy management matters are ongoing."
