Lando Norris survived an incident-packed race in the rain to win F1's British Grand Prix on Sunday and cut the gap to his team-mate and title rival Oscar Piastri.

Norris won his home race for the first time after Piastri had to serve a 10-second penalty for sharp braking behind the safety car while in the lead.

In a race with plenty of crashes and spins, Sauber's Nico Hulkenberg was third from 19th on the grid for his first podium finish in his 239th race of an F1 career that began in 2010.

Defending champion Max Verstappen started on pole but ended up fifth after spinning from second at a safety-car restart, briefly dropping to 10th.

Lando Norris wins the British Grand Prix

The chequered flag is out. Lando Norris WINS the British Grand Prix. He’s the first Brit not named Lewis Hamilton to win this race since David Coulthard in 2000.

Not even Jenson Button, the 2009 world champion, ever managed it.

It's a McLaren one-two with Piastri in second.

Hamilton is denied his first Ferrari podium by Nico Hulkenberg who in his 239th F1 race FINALLY has his first ever top-three finish.

Silverstone, ladies and gentlemen - what a track, what a race.

1) Lando Norris

2) Oscar Piastri

3) Nico Hulkenberg

4) Lewis Hamilton

5) Max Verstappen

6) Lance Stroll

7) Pierre Gasly

8) Fernando Alonso

9) Alexander Albon

10) George Russell

Hulkenberg on for a podium

Hulkenberg has a more-than-6s advantage over Hamilton right now with five laps to go.

Maybe, just maybe, we're about to get a first ever Hulk podium.

Stay calm everybody.

Norris just a few laps away

So Norris is into the lead and pits for medium tyres. He's seven laps from winning his first ever British Grand Prix.

Further down the pecking order, Leclerc spins and is down to P14.

Bearman and Ocon also collided a second ago.

Verstappen is P6 but labels his car "undriveable".

A lot of cars pitting

Hamilton's move to softs was a gamble. He's already been overtaken by his team-mate Leclerc after skidding off track on cold tyres.

Hulkenberg has pitted too though, but to inters. So has Leclerc and Albon.

Which allows Lewis to move back to P4 but he's still 8s behind Hulkenberg.

Piastri, running in first, pits and serves his 10s penalty.

Hamilton pits

Verstappen is rising the order now. He's just moved past Gasly into sixth.

Hamilton can't get past Hulkenberg - his tyres have just completely gone, and he's pitted for softs.

Verstappen is also in for slicks with 10 laps to go.

Russell spins in horrible day for Mercedes

Russell gambled to go on slicks - and that gamble has backfired rather badly.

And he goes for a big spin at Maggotts. He's lucky there's a big run-off area else his race would have been over.

"It's much wetter than before," he reports over the radio. Not a good day for Mercedes at all. George is down in 14th.

Another Hamilton Silverstone win? Unlikely

Hamilton, once he eventually takes Hulkenberg's third position here, will be over 29s behind second-placed Norris.

A P2 is possible though given Piastri's penalty.

But there's very little chance of Hamilton winning this race unless Norris crashes.

Meanwhile, Russell pits for slicks in a bid to surge up the order. He returns to the track in 13th.

Hamilton eyeing a podium

An update from lap 37.

Piastri's lead is at 2s, which means Norris is in line to win this British Grand Prix.

Hulkenberg is up to third after overtaking Stroll. A reminder: he has NEVER finished on the podium in 238 F1 races before this.

But Hamilton is up to P4 and is about to be all over the German.

Hamilton into P5

30 laps in now and Hamilton overtakes Gasly to claim P5.

Next up the road is Hulkenerg, four seconds away. Stroll is over 1.5s ahead of the Stake driver.

Verstappen, meanwhile, is still stuck down in 10th.

Watch the Piastri and Verstappen incident

This is the incident that saw Oscar Piastri handed a 10-second penalty...

McLaren react to Piastri penalty

"It is what it is," Zak Brown says of Piastri's penalty. McLaren are trying to protest that decision with the stewards.

He argues that the telemetry suggests the incident wasn't as bad as it looked on TV.

Piastri definitely slammed the brakes, though.

Hamilton is meanwhile back in front of Russell down the inside of Stowe.

Piastri slapped with 10-second penalty

Russell takes Hamilton's P6 after Lewis suffered a slide through the middle of Copse.

What a race this has been. Right now we've got Lance Stroll P3, Nico Hulkenberg P4 and Pierre Gasly P5.

We could be set for some big surprises.

And a HUGE update in from the stewards... a 10-second penalty for race leader Piastri.

That makes Norris, 3.1s behind, the leader despite being second on track.

Antonelli out

Antonelli is out. And we're down to 15 drivers as we near the halfway stage of this Grand Prix.

Piastri is under investigation which could be very good news for a certain Lando Norris, who is second and just over three-and-a-half seconds behind his team-mate.

Verstappen spins!

Max Verstappen spins and he's gone from P2 to P10.

His Red Bull is all over the place and Albon overtakes him into the Wellington Straight, demoting him to 11th.

Max takes the place back after finding some extra grip but he's a long, long way back from the race lead now.

Verstappen has accused Piastri of slowing down too much after the safety car went in. Oscar could be in trouble for that.

Antonelli left with big damage

So now we're down to 16 drivers.

Antonelli is on P16 and has a broken rear diffuser, which will make leaving Silverstone with points a tricky job for the young Italian.

The safety car is coming back in as we start lap 22.

Isack Hadjar in big shunt

We have another Racing Bulls wreckage.

Isack Hadjar has gone heavily into the barrier. He reports that he's OK over the radio.

He has very little visibility and hits the back of Kimi Antonelli's Mercedes before swerving off track.

"I didn't see him, I mean he appeared out of nowhere, man," he says.

The safety car is back out.

Russell and Hamilton change places

We're racing again. There's a lot of spray but the rain has stopped.

Russell is ahead of Hamilton and into P8... but only a few seconds later, he's back ahead!

And both overtake Ocon. That puts Hamilton seventh and Russell eighth.

Safety car is out

It is absolutely bucketing it down at Silverstone and the track is very wet.

The safety car is out on lap 14 of 52 to prevent any cars from aquaplaning.

Piastri was 13 seconds clear but now loses his advantage.

Verstappen back ahead of Norris

And Norris loses his place in the pit lane! McLaren take almost three seconds longer pitting him than Red Bull do Verstappen.

Max is back ahead of him. The Dutchman overtakes Alexander Albon, in P2, and is now trying to claw the gap to Piastri.

The Aussie is 10 seconds ahead up the road.

Meanwhile, it's expected that this rain will last for at least another 10 minutes.

Norris overtakes Verstappen

The rain is falling, and the rain is falling hard.

Verstappen is struggling on his intermediate tyres and Norris is right on him.

The reigning world champion then goes very wide at Chapel and Norris overtakes.

They both come into the pits.

Oscar Piastri into the lead

Oscar Piastri is into the lead and already over two seconds clear of pole-sitter Max Verstappen after less than a lap.

Lando Norris is closing in on the Red Bull man too.

He's around three laps away from being right on his tail.

A third driver out

Gabriel Bortoleto goes off as soon as the virtual safety car ends and hits the gravel, suffering bad damage.

Is that a third casualty already? He's able to get going again...

But then over the radio he's told to retire. We're five laps in and down to 17 drivers. Another safety car is coming.

Two drivers out already

We've got an early virtual safety car at a damp Silverstone.

Liam Lawson is out of the race after a heavy collision with Esteban Ocon on the opening lap.

Lawson pulls up for roadside assistance and the virtual safety car comes out.

Franco Colapinto is also out of this race. The Alpine driver started in the pit lane but stalled and his afternoon is over.

Lights out!

And the action is underway at Silverstone, as Max Verstappen finds sublime traction and bursts out of the blocks.

Lando Norris starts well, as Lewis Hamilton keeps up pace from the off.

Spray is whipping up around every corner, as we await to learn whether a safety car could be needed sooner rather than later.

Liam Lawson pulls up and his race is over, while Hamilton makes an early surge to push ahead of Norris but is thwarted by his fellow Brit.

Russell on hard tires

A quick change after the formation lap, as the teams try to work out how best to work out this track.

Part of the Silverstone circuit is wet, while other areas are dry. It's not the easiest.

Hamilton clashes with comedian

Lewis Hamilton has had a rather awkward moment on the Silverstone grid, just moments before the race.

Comedian Jack Whitehall has confessed to Sky Sports that he almost shoved straight into the superstar of the sport.

"Just now when I was being invited to the grid I nearly body-checked Sir Lewis Hamilton, " he explained.

"I don't know whether I'm going to be invited back again, it was a very cold stare. But maybe that was for the jokes I made at F1 75 as well and not just the body check."

Whitehall then added, with a grin: "My mum is very excited to see Martin Brundle, I brought her with me. She said that he is her hall pass, whatever that means...”

National anthem ringing out

The wind is whipping up, as God Save the King is sung at Silverstone and fireworks explode.

Lando Norris is cutting a focus and composed figure.

Speaking to Sky Sports, youngster Ollie Bearman said: "I've never seen it as full as it is here, at Silverstone.

"I'm looking forward to seeing what unfolds here."

Pit lane. Franco Colapinto

Franco Colapinto sent to the pit lane

Franco Colapinto will start the British Grand Prix from the pit lane after Alpine broke Parc Ferme conditions to bolt new components onto his A525 machine.

The Argentine driver suffered a qualifying crash that left him at the bottom of the timing screens, making it a no-brainer for Alpine to execute some changes.

Kimi Antonelli reveals British GP starting tyre!

Kimi Antonelli made a rare blunder ahead of the British Grand Prix, revealing his starting tyre in an interview with F1 TV.

The Italian was asked whether he would be starting on the medium or hard compound tyre if the track dries out in time for the race start. After a moment of consideration, he said: "Probably the medium."

This response elicited a brief and awkward flash of surprise on the face of George Russell, clearly caught off guard by Antonelli's decision to reveal Mercedes' tactics for the Grand Prix.
