Bernie Ecclestone explains why he won't attend F1 legend Eddie Jordan's funeral
The ex-Formula One supremo has revealed he won't be attending Eddie Jordan's funeral.
Bernie Ecclestone has revealed he doesn’t intend on going to the funeral of Formula One icon Eddie Jordan, who passed away aged 76. Jordan had been battling prostate cancer and underwent a bout of chemotherapy for the disease, but ultimately lost his fight on Thursday surrounded by family in South Africa.
Jordan was a former race car driver, and Formula One team owner, later transitioning into punditry, working on both Channel 4 and the BBC’s coverage. He was a much-loved figure in the world of Formula One and has left a lasting legacy on the sport and its figureheads, including former F1 supremo Ecclestone.

However, as revealed after Jordan’s passing, Ecclestone has no intention of going to his chum’s funeral. Speaking to the Daily Mail, he said: “I would have given him an open cheque because I trusted him totally. I won’t be going to his funeral. I don’t go to funerals. I may not go to mine. He certainly won’t go to mine. So, it’s all fair. It always was with Eddie.”
Ecclestone, who is now into his nineties, had remained in contact with each other, with the Brit mourning the loss of his Irish companion. He added: “I am very, very sad because Eddie was a special guy. Tell me which team principal today is like him. You can’t give me one because there isn’t one. They don’t make them like that now. We will never replace him in Formula One.

“He had been ill for some months. I last heard he was given two diagnoses by different doctors. One told him he was in trouble and another that all his problems had gone away. Now we know the answer, unfortunately.”
Jordan’s death was confirmed via a statement from his family, which read: "Eddie passed away peacefully with family by his side in Cape Town in the early hours of 20th March 2025 at the age of 76, after battling with an aggressive form of prostate cancer for the past 12 months."

Jordan's passing sparked tributes from across the world of Formula One. President and CEO of Formula One, Stefano Domenicali, wrote: “We are deeply saddened to hear about the sudden loss of Eddie Jordan. With his inexhaustible energy he always knew how to make people smile, remaining genuine and brilliant at all times.
“Eddie has been a protagonist of an era of F1 and he will be deeply missed. In this moment of sorrow, my thoughts and those of the entire Formula 1 family are with his family and loved ones.”
