Charles Leclerc has revealed that he has connected with Lewis Hamilton over fashion, music and other interests as the two drivers prepare to become team-mates at Ferrari next season.

Hamilton was poached from Mercedes back in February and will replace the Williams-bound Carlos Sainz, with whom Leclerc shared a strong team-mate relationship over their four years together at Maranello.

The Monegasque racer is expected to enjoy an equally fruitful partnership with Hamilton, who also has a strong recent track record of getting on well with team-mates since his close relationship with Nico Rosberg went toxic during the turbo-hybrid era.

Hamilton and Leclerc are seemingly committed to forming a harmonious relationship as the seven-time world champion prepares for what will likely be the final chapter of his glittering F1 career.

Offering an insight into their private conversations, Leclrc explained: “Me and Lewis had a good relationship in the past but since we knew that we would be team-mates from next year, we got to know each other a bit more.

“And we spoke quite often about our common passion, like music for example, or fashion. We didn’t speak yet too much about racing itself because he’s fully focused still on his Mercedes season and I’m still fully focused on this season, but it will come.”

Leclerc has previously made it clear that he intends to soak up as much knowledge as possible when Hamilton arrives at Maranello. “When you have a seven-time world champion joining the team it is always good news, very interesting and very motivating,” he told Motorsport Italy earlier this season.

“It is interesting because I will be able to learn from one of the best drivers in the entire history of F1, and it is very motivating because I am intrigued by the comparison with Lewis in the same car. For these two reasons, I can't wait to start this new chapter.”

Team principal Fred Vasseur is also anticipating Hamilton’s arrival and believes that the Brit’s presence in the team can help Leclerc take the next step in his career. “Even for Charles, having Lewis there will be very useful,” he told L’Equipe.

“He is a monster in terms of organisation and approaching the race. He will raise the level of our demands and preparation. I feel he wants to win so badly. Lewis is an excellent motivator.

“It’s not just a question of setting a faster lap time. It is also about knowing we have 1,500 people who want to compete because he is there, because he pushes, because he will not settle for the first best answer he gets.”
